What Is Edición Limitada? A Guide to Cuba's Rarest Cigars
Share
If you've spent any time browsing Cuban cigars, you've probably noticed a box carrying a second band in black and gold, reading "Edición Limitada" followed by a year. These are Cuba's Limited Edition Havanas - arguably the single most sought-after category in the entire Habanos portfolio, and the release every serious collector circles on the calendar each year.
In this guide, we'll explain exactly what Edición Limitada means, how the programme works, which brands take part, and what to look for before you commit a box to your humidor.

The Origins of the Edición Limitada Programme
Habanos S.A., the state-run company behind every genuine Cuban cigar, launched Edición Limitada in 2000 with four releases: the Hoyo de Monterrey Particulares, Montecristo Robustos, Partagás Pirámides and Romeo y Julieta Exhibición No. 2. For the first five years the programme was reserved for Habanos' five biggest global names - Cohiba, Montecristo, Romeo y Julieta, Partagás and Hoyo de Monterrey - before widening in later years to include Bolívar, H. Upmann, Punch, Trinidad and others.
Every year since 2000 has seen a release, with the sole exception of 2002. From 2004 onwards, Habanos settled into its now-familiar rhythm of two to three Edición Limitada cigars a year.

How an Edición Limitada Cigar Is Made
Every Limited Edition Havana follows a strict set of criteria set by Habanos S.A.:
- A new size for the brand. Each release uses a vitola the marca has never produced before in regular production - so an Edición Limitada is never simply a repackaged existing cigar, even if the size itself exists elsewhere in the Habanos range.
- Specially aged tobacco. Since 2007, the wrapper, binder and filler have all been aged for a minimum of two years before rolling, giving these cigars a darker wrapper and a noticeably richer, more settled profile than a brand's standard-production lines.
- Genuine scarcity. Production numbers are almost never disclosed, and once a year's release sells out, it isn't repeated - a major driver of long-term collector demand.
- A distinctive second band. Alongside the brand's standard band, every Edición Limitada carries a black-on-gold band reading "Edición Limitada" and the year of announcement (the very first release in 2000 was the only one without a year printed).

Limited Edition Havanas in Our Collection
The programme has produced some genuinely landmark cigars over the past two decades, and our own selection spans almost its entire history - from the very first year of release right through to some of its most talked-about modern editions:
- Romeo y Julieta Exhibición No. 2 Limited Edition 2000 - one of the four founding releases that launched the programme.
- Cohiba Robusto Supremos Limited Edition 2014
- Trinidad Topes Limited Edition 2016
- Montecristo Dantes Limited Edition 2016
- Cohiba Talismán Limited Edition 2017 - the release many collectors still point to as the high-water mark for the programme.
- Bolívar Soberanos Limited Edition 2018
- Bolívar Regentes Limited Edition 2021
We've also previously carried the Cohiba 1966 Limited Edition 2011, now sold out - a good example of exactly the scarcity this programme is built on: once a release is gone, it isn't coming back.
Why Collectors Chase Limited Edition Havanas
For serious Habanos collectors, Edición Limitada offers something the standard range can't: a genuinely finite production run, tied to a specific year and a story - an anniversary, a revived vitola, a brand's first appearance in the programme.
Once a box sells out, that's it - there's no reissue and no restock. That scarcity is exactly why older, sold-out Edición Limitada boxes routinely trade well above their original retail price on the secondary market.
If you're building a collection, three things are worth checking before you buy:
- Provenance. Buy only from an authorised Habanos retailer to guarantee authenticity and correct box coding.
- Condition and storage. Ask how the boxes have been kept - humidity control matters enormously for a cigar you may be holding for years before smoking.
- The story behind the release. Understanding why a particular Edición Limitada was made - an anniversary, a revived size, a brand's debut in the programme - often tells you as much about its long-term desirability as its rarity does.
